Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme was, “Is America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision?” There were two Teays Valley High School sophomore students that placed in the top spots at our local VFW Post 7941 in South Bloomfield. Elise Thorp was awarded first place and Briar Furby was awarded second place. Congrats to Elise and Briar!

Congratulations to Teays Valley High School students Mitchell Isralewitz and Krys Young! They wrote outstanding essays and were sponsored by the Pickaway County Library to attend the prestigious Dayton Literary Peace Prize Gala. Accompanied by TVHS librarian Lisa Campbell, they had the amazing opportunity to attend the event at the Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton. The DLPP is the only literary peace prize awarded in the United States, celebrating the power of literature to foster peace and understanding. At the gala, they enjoyed a wonderful meal and were inspired by the powerful words of this year’s fiction and nonfiction winners, runners-up and past honorees. The evening also included a special moment honoring Jimmy Carter with the Holbrooke Award, accepted by his grandson, Jason Carter. We’re so proud to see our students engaging in meaningful opportunities like this!
