Purpose of Standardized Assessments Administered in Teays Valley Local Schools

State Assessments

Explanation/ Purpose

Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA)

  • In 14-15 only administered for 3rd Grade Reading
  • A 394 is needed in order to meet the requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee

Ohio’s Next Generation of Assessments

  • Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments will be administered in English Language Arts in grades 4-8 and some high school courses and in Mathematics in grades 3-8 and some high school courses.
  • Ohio has developed new Science (grade 5) and Social Studies (grade 4) assessments.
  • There are computer-based assessments given in two sessions.  the first session is a Performance-based assessment.  The Performance-based assessment is given at the end of February or in early March.  The End of Course of End of Year assessment is given in mid-April or early May.
  • The data from these assessments will make up a large components of the district’s Local Report Card released by the Ohio Department of Education.

Kindergarten Readiness Assessments (KRA)

  • The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) assessments tool that is designed to help teachers identify early reading and math skills.
  • The KRA is required of all children in kindergarten
  • Measures skill areas important to becoming a successful reader & is based on Pre-K standards

Physical Education Evaluation

  • State mandated PE assessment given in 2nd grade.  
  • Measures student success in meeting the benchmarks contained in the Physical Education Academic Content Standards

Ohio Diagnostics

  • The Third Grade reading Guarantee has mandated that Kindergarten through third grade students take a Reading diagnostic by September 30th each school year.  The KRA (Language and Literacy) and the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) are the diagnostic assessments used in Teays Valley to meeting this requirement.
  • First and second grade students must take a math diagnostic.  MAP Math is used to meet this requirement.
  • First and second grade students must take a writing diagnostic.  MAP language is used to meet this requirement.



Purpose of Standardized Assessments Administered in Teays Valley

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

  • This is a norm referenced test which produces a reading and math RIT score and Lexile reading level for each student.  It is given three times per year in the fall, winter and spring to 1st - 5th grades.

COGAT

  • A test of cognitive ability.  This is used for gifted identification purposes.  The assessment is given to all 4th graders.

Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)

  • A district common assessment given to elementary students to measure current reading skills.  Measures comprehension, accuracy and fluency.  Given to students in grades K-5.

*Ohio Graduation Test (OGT)

  • Students must pass all five parts of the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) in order to receive high school diplomas. The OGT are aligned to Ohio's academic content standards, which were adopted by the State Board of Education in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. These standards have been carefully designed to ensure that students are armed with the knowledge they need to be successful in higher educational pursuits as well as for jobs and careers of the future.

*The Graduating Class of 2017 will be the last class to take the OGT as a requirement to earn a high school diploma. The Class of 2018 and beyond will be held to Ohio’s New Graduation Requirements.
